Flag, taxes, and partiotism

A question from Yahoo! Answers:

Does putting a flag on your porch or paying taxes, make you an American Patriot?

If I remember correctly, originally the word “patriot” meant “a person opposed to the existing (British) government”. People who were content with the existing government and displayed its flag on their front porches were called loyalists.

Also, paying taxes is not a function of U.S. citizenship. U.S. citizens living abroad do not pay taxes in the U.S. Foreign nationals living in the U.S. do.
