Certification for a Web developer?

A question from Yahoo! Answers:

Any good web development / web master certification out there?

Ok, so I have a B.A. in Graphic Design and have been getting into web development and maintaining over the years. I want to get more of an education in the Technical part of web developing and get a certificate online while i’m at it. I’m working as a Web Site Coordinator with a company that will pay for my continuing education (perferably online). What is a good certification that I could get that would be crediable and look impressive when I apply for other jobs in the future.

There is no such certification. Web developers use a wide array of development tools (ASP, ASP.Net, JSP, Perl, PHP, and many others). Some of them are not certifiable per se. For example, if you want to be certified in something ASP.Net-related, you have to pass five Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) for Microsoft .NET exams; four out of five are required (Web Application Development, Windows Application Development, Web Services and Server Components Development, and Solution Architecture), but only one is directly relevant to Web development.

If you develop in JSP, you could pursue Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) certification:

If you develop in PHP, you could pursue Zend PHP Certification:

As to Perl, it seems that the Perl community is simply not interested in having a certification.
